This is probably my favorite Trader Joe’s find EVER. EVER!
I always have some of this stocked in my fridge and it comes in handy pretty often in our house. Especially with a future husband who suffers from terrible acid reflux when he has red sauce, this is a great alternative to use that he LOVES and doesn’t cause him stomach issues.
I first tried this stuff about 6 months ago when I was making a pizza recipe (The Spicy Cauli) because I wanted it to have a basil pesto base sauce, but was looking for something with not much oil. The pizza was being made on a cauliflower crust and so I was trying to use fewer ingredients and avoid anything with any extra ‘liquid’ added.
So here’s my full review on this amazing sauce, but if you can’t tell already from this post, I LOVE IT!
The Taste:
Compared to some other basil pesto sauces, this one has a very fresh taste. While I love a good dose of EVOO, I think sometimes the other pre-packaged basil pestos can taste like that….oily, pre-packaged sauce. This version has a really nice balance of fresh basil and slight bitterness of kale and then the cashews balance them both out.
The Texture:
I wouldn’t say that the texture is too much different than your normal basil pesto sauce. However, what you will notice is the lack of oil in this version. Since this is made with cashews, it just isn’t as oily and I like that, especially on several of the recipes I have linked below for you!
The Price:
You can scoop this up at your Trader Joe’s for around $3 depending on where you live. It is located in the refrigerated section near all their hummus!
How to #CookItHealthier:
Well, this stuff is so good you will want to find more and more ways to use it, but here are a few ideas to get you inspired!
-pasta sauce (Alternative to red sauce. We do this a lot in our house because my fiance has really horrible acid reflux problems with red sauces)
-topping on eggs
-pizza sauce base (see below for several recipes you can try out from this site 🙂 )

This is delicious. Can’t wait to try your recipes. Any idea how long it is good for after opening?
Thanks so much, Bree! I think i’ve had it open in the fridge for at least a couple weeks before finally using it all up! I think it is good for longer because it is dairy free. Definitely try it on the Chicken Parmesan recipe I posted the other day! It was such a delicious touch of flavor!
