RECIPE | Cinnamon Baked Applesauce

I began making this for our baby when he was around 7 months old. I wanted him to experience lots of flavors from the beginning of his little eating journey. The sweetness of baked apples and the “spice” of cinnamon was a combo recommended to me. Plus, what kid doesn’t like applesauce?!

It’s honestly a very simple recipe outside of the peeling of the apples…yeah, that part takes a little effort, but once you taste the final product it will all be worth it. Trust me. Plus, for me, there really hasn’t been anything more satisfying than making something like this for our baby that I know doesn’t have a bunch of added sugars. Just fresh apples and some coconut oil and cinnamon. That’s it.

Hope you enjoy this recipe, especially this fall. It is delicious warm right out of the food processor. I have actually considered adding it to a little ice cream. Perhaps a recipe variation is being born right now… hmm. Stay tuned.

Side note- it really does take a lot of apples to produce a decent amount of applesauce, so I really don’t recommend skimping on the apple amount. The 4 lbs of apples I used ended up making enough to fit into this 24oz mason jar. This amount lasted us a week in the fridge just fine! Perfect for baby servings and a few bites here and there for mom.

Yields1 Serving

4 lbs peeled apples ( I used honeycrisp, but any sweet red apple should be great)
 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
 2 tbsp coconut oil

D I R E C T I O N S //
1

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

2

Peel and core all the apples. Then slice each apple into 8 - 10 slices. Toss the slices into a large bowl. Once all the apples are sliced, place half of them into a gallon bag. Toss in 1 Tbsp coconut oil and 1/2 a Tbsp cinnamon. Seal up the bag and toss together until all the slices are well coated with the cinnamon. Then you will spread the slices into one layer onto one of your parchment paper lined baking sheets. Repeat for the second half of the apple slices.

3

Pop the two baking sheets with all your apple slices into the oven on the middle rack. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes. Once they are fork tender, they are ready to come out!

4

Finally, toss in all the baked cinnamon apple slices into a food processor or vitamix, blend until smooth.
*NOTE: this recipe lends to a thicker, less watery applesauce. If you want a bit more juice, you can add quarter cups of no sugar added apple juice to the blended applesauce until it reaches your desired texture.
